MKV or WebM Won’t Play? Convert to MP4 Free in Your Browser
Two formats cause more “why won’t this play?” moments than any other. MKV is the container most downloaded movies and series arrive in, and plenty of smart TVs, phones and car systems refuse it. WebM is what browsers and screen recorders produce, and PowerPoint, iPhones and most video editors want nothing to do with it.
The answer to both is the same: convert to MP4, the format everything plays. The free converter on Uhondo does this inside your browser, with no upload and no size limits from a server.
How to convert MKV or WebM to MP4
- Go to pewauhondo.com/video-tools and stay on the Convert tab.
- Choose your MKV or WebM file.
- Keep the output as MP4 (H.264) and, if you like, cap the resolution.
- Click Convert now and download the MP4.
MKV to MP4: what you should know
MKV files often already contain H.264 video, and what stops them playing is only the container and sometimes the audio codec. The converter re-encodes to H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container, which is the combination that TVs, phones, PS5, Xbox and every media player accept.
Movies are long, so a full re-encode of a two-hour film on a laptop will take a while. If you only need one scene, use the Trim tab first in fast mode: it cuts without re-encoding in a fraction of a second, then convert the short clip.
WebM to MP4: screen recordings and browser downloads
Chrome’s built-in screen recorders, Loom-style tools and many browser extensions save video as WebM. That’s fine for sharing a link, but the moment you want to drop the recording into PowerPoint, Google Slides, a WordPress post, iMovie or an iPhone, you need MP4.
The conversion is straightforward. WebM screen recordings are usually 720p or 1080p and quite compressible, so converting even a 20-minute recording on a laptop is a reasonable job. You’ll see a progress bar with a time estimate.
Why not upload to a converter site?
MKV files in particular are big. Uploading a 1.5 GB film to a converter site is slow, often blocked by free-tier size limits, and means your file sits on a server. Most free converter sites limit file size for exactly this reason.
The Uhondo tool has no server in the loop. FFmpeg runs inside your browser as WebAssembly, and your own device does the conversion. The practical limit is your device’s memory, which the tool checks before starting (around 500 MB on a desktop by default). For most series episodes and all screen recordings that’s plenty, and for a large film you can trim the section you need first.
Data and privacy
Nothing is uploaded, so on mobile data the conversion costs nothing beyond the engine’s one-time download. And because the file never leaves your device, it’s private by default.
Convert now
Make your MKV downloads and WebM recordings play everywhere with the free MKV and WebM to MP4 converter. The same page also extracts audio, compresses video, trims clips, makes GIFs and removes audio.
