It's been over 40 years since the U.S. men's ice hockey team last won a gold medal at the Olympics, though anyone who pays close attention to Olympic hockey doesn't need to be told that. Many of us haven't seen the U.S. take the top podium spot in our lifetimes.

But when exactly was the last time the U.S. came away with gold? It was a moment many sports fans have surely heard about: the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" in Lake Placid, New York.

The U.S. beat the four-time defending champion Soviet Union in a massive upset with a team of mostly amateurs toppling a squad full of seasoned pros. Which led to Al Michaels' famous call of the final seconds: "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!"

It was the second gold medal ever for the U.S., which also won gold in 1960. The U.S. won silver twice since that last gold medal, in 2010 and 2002.
